Pidy launch second year of ‘Revamp the Vol-au-vent’ Student Catering Challenge

Following a hugely successful year in 2017, Belgian based ‘Ready-to-fill’ pastry manufacturer, Pidy, is delighted to bring back its student challenge aimed at catering and hospitality students within the UK! The Pidy ‘Revamp the Vol-au-vent’ catering challenge provides students with a rewarding culinary experience that puts their creativity, knowledge and skill to the test.

The challenge invites catering students to revamp the traditional vol-au-vent, using at least one of the three best-selling Pidy vol-au-vents. However, this year the students must create an inventive dish that features a ‘street food’ theme.

Pidy introduced the competition not only to explore the culinary possibilities that the Pidy vol-au-vent range has to offer but also to inspire the next generation of chefs, whilst providing them with an opportunity to showcase their talent.

A panel will paper-judge the menu concepts and choose the eight best entries. All of which will be invited to attend a Grand Final Cook-Off, taking place at The Claire Clark Pastry Academy at Milton Keynes College, on Friday 07th December 2018 at 12.00pm. The live cook-off final will give students the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and present their dish to a whole host of industry professionals. Top internationally renowned Pastry Chef and TV judge, Claire Clark MBE will return to the panel for a second consecutive year.

The budding young chefs will be competing to impress the judges for the winning title. The winner will be awarded the prestigious ‘vol-au-vent’ trophy, a lunchtime meal for two at Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons & £200 worth of catering vouchers.

We have taken the challenge to the next level by making the brief more specific with a ‘street food’ theme, not only to differentiate from last year’s competition but also to test the student’s abilities even more.
Continuing the competition is all part of our vision of engaging with catering students and encouraging them to peruse their talent. It is such a rewarding experience and excellent practice for the students to be able to present their skills in a fun yet professional environment. For many, it is their first competition and it helps to develop their confidence in the kitchen greatly. The students blew us away last year and definitely proved that there’s so much that can be done with a small hollow case of puff pastry! We can’t wait to see what this year’s competitors have in store for us.”
